Tool Configuration

Last updated: Jan 2026

Overview

Tool configuration allows you to set default parameters and overrides for tools like Tavily Search, Extract, Crawl, and Map. When an AI model calls a tool, your configured values are automatically applied, ensuring consistent behavior across your workflow.

Supported Tools

Tool configuration is currently available for Tavily tools: Search, Extract, Crawl, and Map. More tools will be added in future updates.

How It Works

When you configure a tool, your settings are saved and applied automatically during workflow execution. The configuration process is straightforward:

1

Click on Tool Badge

In your workflow step, click on any configurable tool badge to open the configuration modal.

2

Set Your Parameters

Configure options like search depth, max results, domain restrictions, and more based on your needs.

3

Save Configuration

Click save and your configuration is applied. The tool badge shows a settings icon to indicate it has custom configuration.

4

Automatic Override

When the AI calls the tool during execution, your configured values override any parameters the model might specify.

Visual Indicator

Tool badges with custom configuration display a small settings icon, making it easy to identify which tools have been configured.

Configuring Tools

Access tool configuration from two places in the workflow editor:

  • Tool Badge Click: Click directly on a tool badge in the step node to open configuration.
  • Config Panel: Open the Tools section in the step configuration panel and click any tool.
  • Reset to Defaults: Use the Reset button in the modal to restore default settings.
  • Per-Step Config: Each step can have different configurations for the same tool.

Tavily Extract Options

Configure content extraction settings for the Tavily Extract tool.

ParameterDescription

Best Practices

Follow these guidelines for effective tool configuration:

  • Use domain restrictions for research that requires trusted sources
  • Set appropriate max_results to balance comprehensiveness with cost
  • Enable include_answer for quick summaries in research workflows
  • Use time_range filters for news and current events research
  • Configure different settings per step when tasks have different requirements
  • Reset to defaults when troubleshooting unexpected behavior

Common Use Cases

Use CaseRecommended Configuration
Documentation ResearchRestrict search to official docs with include_domains, use advanced depth
News MonitoringSet topic to news, time_range to day, enable include_answer
Competitor AnalysisUse crawl with specific domains, higher max_depth for comprehensive data
